IZOD CENTER, EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ, DEC 15, 2010 As my wife and I exited the Izod Center in the blistering cold, we were hardly affected by the numbing chill as overwhelm warmed our bones, due to an awe inspiring show by Prince. Though I've seen Prince on numerous occasions, I didn't think I'd be this mesmerized from such an outstanding display. After viewing enjoyable opening performances by Esperanza Spalding and Lalah Hathaway, the darkened theater was inevitably lit by the musical legend, as he surprisingly rose from the floor, under a stage, which was impressively shaped by his infamous symbol. Opening up with a vibrant version of "Laydown", he and his band proceeded into an energized megamix of classics including "Cream" and "U Got The Look". Though performing on such a magnanimous stage, the platform was an extremely entertaining playground, which was filled with flawless, non-stop choreography by his band and three female vocalists. At one point, Prince was assisted by a ballet dancer as he effortlessly played "The Beautiful Ones" on his grand piano. The concert didn't go without elements of surprise. Interestingly, at one quick moment, confetti was shot towards the crowd, leaving the audience, gasping with smiles. Though it may sound like a halftime show antic, it was a welcoming stunner. He even had the concert lights turned off, and encouraged the filled arena to flick on their cell phones. Though reminiscent of an Erricson commercial, the phonelit room was fun and engaging, allowing untypical audience participation. Though Prince has a plethora of musical hits and fan favorites, it's unlikely that he can play them all. However, I've been told that no concert on this final tour will have the same setlist. I guess which is why my obsessive wife is going to two more concerts in January. Regardless of high hopes to hear Prince's greatest hits, his overall performance was impeccable and dynamically impressive. Every moment on stage entailed a magical energy, filled with entertaining excitement. Each step, each movement, each note, was displayed with diligence, significance and meaning. Winding down the evening, Prince and his gifted group of artists performed a fist pumping medley of "Controversy" and "Le Freak" by Chic. The encore consisted of such vibrance and energy, their final note left the audience in awe and desiring more, much more. Ironically, it's been said that hip hop saved a lot of lives, giving many an outlet as an alternative to joining gangs. Regardless of the opinions, the year 1990 was exceptional turn of the decade for hip hop music and culture. If you listen closely, it's easy to decipher the important messages, trying to be conveyed. Even if you don't listen closely, the party beats will keep you rocking, nodding, moving and grooving! In retrospect, I think every song in this mix used a sample. We love soul. Whether the soul makes you nod your head, tap your feet or get up and dance, we love it. Soul is apparent in so many genres of music, that our musical tastes cover an extremely broad spectrum of aural pleasures...including DISCO! Welcome to Wiggle City's Top 5 Disco Faves! 5. "Hear Comes That Sound Again" - Love De-Luxe, 1979, Warner Bros. Love De-Luxe was a studio group, spearheaded by infamous British producer, Alan Hawkshaw, well known for his Mowhawks production "The Champ". Plus, he's the father of Kirsty Hawshaw, whose beautiful voice graced us with pioneering songs with Orbital and Opus III. Featuring Vicki Brown and Jo-Ann Stone on vocals, this disco favorite reached #1 on the Hot Dance Music chart. This hot track was also remixed by dance music producer, Simon Harris, in 1988. Plus, we at Wiggle City have worked with both Alan and Kirsty. Craziness! 4. "Ten Percent" - Double Exposure, 1976, Salsoul "Ten Percent" was recorded in Philadelphia's legendary Sigma Sound Studios. But it was NYC DJ, Walter Gibbons, who remixed the original 4 minute recording into a 9 minute club smash, making "Ten Percent" the first commercial 12" single by Salsoul Records. Not only did the song reach gold status, but it was historically part of the early stages of "remixing". When Gibbons first played his 12" remix live, one club patron exclaimed, "it sounded so new, going backwards and forwards. It built and built like it would never stop. The dance floor just exploded." We at Wiggle City absolutely agree. 3. "Come To Me" - France Joli, 1979, Prelude This beautiful disco track was recorded when France Joli was only 15 years old. Raised in Montreal, Joli received her big break when she was a last minute replacement for Donna Summer for a concert held in Fire Island, NY, before an audience of 5000 fans. From here, her record shot up the charts, reaching up to #15 in the Billboard Hot 100. She and producer, Tony Green, share a smooth duet on the song, but it's Joli's sincere voice that makes this "feel good" track irresistable. 2. "Groovin You" - Harvey Mason, 1979, Arista Harvey Mason is known as a jazz drummer, working with greats such as Bob James, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, George Benson and many others. But Mr. Mason's disco gem is filled with so many hooks and strong basslines, it was sampled in Gusto's 1995 house anthem, "Disco's Revenge". Harvey's son, Harvey Mason Jr., is also a formidable producer and songwriter, working with the likes of Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and more. Though it seems that everyone was creating disco tracks in the 70's, "Groovin'You"'s wonderful essence sets itself apart. 1. "Mainline" - Black Ivory, 1979, Buddah Based out of Harlem, Black Ivory had numerous R&B hits throughout the 1970's. In fact, some of their songs were sampled by Q-Tip, Brand Nubian and Omarion. Lead vocalist, Leroy Burgess, is related to the founding members of Kool & The Gang and still performing and releasing albums today. The melodies on this club hit are extremely memorable and the song changes keep the sound moving, vibrant and energetic, making "Mainline" an ultimate bigroom favorite. On Thursday, July 29th, the Philadephia DJ community, deep house afficionados, friends and family, celebrated the life of veteran house DJ, Randy Flash. The celebration brought so many people together, as I ran into old friends I haven't seen in years. The DJ community was well represented, as numerous players from a variety of genres, joined the festivities, to celebrate the life of our endearing friend. But of course, the aural pleasure, mostly consisted of soulful driven, deep house music. Props to the all-star filled DJ lineup who wooed the crowds all evening, featuring DJ Freedom, Mike Maserati, SuperDJ Terrell Clark & Jym Pratt. As each performer mixed their story filled musical compositions, the emotional expression was uplifting, tearful and beautiful. Thanks to all for such a memorable event, as hints of Shelter loomed the summer night environment. Randy, your kindness and passion will always be remembered. You've left an indelible impression with everyone you've crossed paths with, as your sincerity and dynamic graciousness made the world a better place. May your smile linger on. On Wednesday, July 14, 2010, Philadelphia veteran house DJ, Randy Flash, was killed due to a senseless act of violence, causing an absolute emotional outrage in not only the local community, but the DJ community as well.
